To live in this fast moving world, we all have to sync ourselves with the growing technology and adapt changes as soon as we can. There were times when we want a machine to calculate some arithmetic operations, it takes days to design an algorithm but now it just a play of fraction of seconds. The biggest advancement of technology that we can see around is the introduction of bots in 21st century. Technologies like Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are that advanced that they have created a kind of ambiguity in humans’ mind. Therefore, it is correct to say: “Humans are following bots, Bots are following technology”.
If we take the period of last 5-6 months i.e. the lockdown period , all of us can clearly realize the advantages and disadvantages of technologies. If we talk with industrial point of view, businesses and startups that are digitally active are only able to manage themselves in this new normal. For normal beings like us, technology has served as the source for entertainment. Broadly, if we pick any industry from agriculture to entertainment, from wellness to IT, all are now easily available digitally. To go digital, the basic necessity for every individual is getting access to internet.
Developed countries have already filled this gap with only a small percentage of people left without internet whereas if we see the same stats in developing countries, there is a large gap. Obviously, new technologies like 5G has introduced but telecom operators and Internet service providers are suffering from a great problem, the growing traffic and its associated bandwidth demands. Finding solution for this problem, researchers and experts from UCL have experimented with some hardware and are successful to achieve the data transmission rate of 178 terabits a second (178,000,000 megabits a second) – a speed at which it would be possible to download the entire Netflix library in less than a second.
HOW THIS IS ACHIEVED?
The technique is a little difficult to understand if you don’t have a science background. The researchers played with spectrum bandwidth to achieve this higher bandwidth. By spectrum bandwidth, it is here meant that data is transmitted using wider range of colors of light, or wavelengths same as the concept used in the optical fiber to transmit data.
With this broad spectrum, every associated wavelength in it has unique characteristics that defines it for example phase, brightness and polarization. Researchers manipulated every wavelength to its maximum efficiency with different amplifier technologies. These amplifier technologies helped in boosting the signal power over this wider bandwidth and are successful in maximizing the speed by developing new Geometric Shaping (GS) constellations (a constellation made by different wavelengths). This way researchers are successful in making a bandwidth of 16.8 THz which was limited to only 4.5 THz and 9 THz commercially.
Dr Galdino, a Lecturer at UCL and a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow, said: “While current state-of-the-art cloud data-centre interconnections are capable of transporting up to 35 terabits a second, we are working with new technologies that utilize the existing infrastructure more efficiently, making better use of optical fiber bandwidth and enabling a world record transmission rate of 178 terabits a second.”
CONCLUSION
Researchers even said that that this technology can also be deployed in the existing infrastructure in which the operators just have to upgrade the amplifier technologies in data lines that are spread over 40-100 km intervals. In this crisis, we all know that there has been a huge need for expanded bandwidth and with more and more are engaging regularly on the internet, operators should find a better approach other than native to support the new demands.
